Technical Communications Program

Non-TCP Departmental Courses

In addition to staffing its own courses, the TCP provides speech and writing instructors to engineering faculty for use in their departmental courses. Professors use tutors in a wide variety of ways to help their students improve their communication skills. Since different departments perceive their students’ needs differently, we work very closely with faculty to devise flexible approaches for providing writing and speaking instruction.

We try to make the instruction discipline-specific and have designed different “models” for providing that instruction. Some courses use both writing and speech instructors; others only speech or writing. Frequently, professors invite tutors to give guest lectures, “presentations on giving presentations.” In some the professors require their students to receive tutorial feedback; in others professors simply recommend that their students receive tutorial help. In a few courses, tutors grade assignments; in others they provide only comments.

The TCP provides assistance to faculty who wish to integrate writing and speaking assignments into their courses.
