M. Elisabeth Paté-Cornell, MS '72 (OR), PhD '78 (EES), becomes chair of the Industrial Engineering and Engineering Management (IEEM) Department and the first woman to chair an engineering department at Stanford. A member of the National Academy of Engineering, Paté-Cornell also later becomes the first woman to hold an endowed professorship in the SoE when she is named the Burt & Deedee McMurtry Professor.
