Ralph Smith, PhD '45 (EE), and Jim Gibbons, MS '54, PhD '56 (EE), join the SoE. Professor Smith heads the undergraduate program in EE. Professor Gibbons teaches solid-state electronics to undergraduates and initiates the semiconductor processing effort at Stanford.
"The world he shows students is full of progress and promise; engineers are the indispensable doers who devise ways to put the rich flow of laboratory discoveries to work for mankind. He will have no part of the gloom over smog, traffic snarls, and disruption effects of automation. These are things to be dealt with, far counterbalanced by gains already achieved in decreased drudgery and greater freedom for cultivated, enriched living."
The Stanford Review, 1964, on Professor Ralph Smith
