The Ryan High Voltage Laboratory opens with financial support from the power industry and the City of Los Angeles. EE Professor Harris Ryan is a leader in the study of high-voltage overhead transmission lines. His lab directly influences every high-voltage power line in the western states, including the design of the power system from Boulder (now Hoover) Dam to Los Angeles. Ryan's lab contains six 350,000-volt transformers that can be connected to give over 2 million volts single phase.
