Engineering and Public Service Information for Faculty

How do I get Funding for a Service-Learning Course?

The Haas Center for Public Service, in conjunction with the office of the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education and Freshman and Sophomore Programs, offers two main funding opportunities for faculty interested in starting a service-learning course. For faculty in engineering, both the Haas Center and the Office of Engineering and Public Service can provide some support for developing and implementing your course.

Seed Funding for Service-Learning Courses

  • Administered by the Haas Center in partnership with the Office of the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education
  • Grants range from $1,500 to $5,000
  • For Stanford faculty interested in designing and developing courses that combine public service with academic study. Special priority is given to proposals that add a significant service component to an existing course or create a new course with a service component. The expectation is that these courses will be offered at least every other year.
  • Haas Center staff is available to consult with faculty members interested in adding a service component to their courses. For engineering faculty, additional consulting support is offered by the Office of Engineering and Public Service.

Funding for Community-Based Learning in Introductory Seminars

  • Additional funding is available (up to $1500) for integrating community-based learning into an introductory seminar.
  • Seminars must go through the regular approval process with Freshman and Sophomore Programs in order to be considered for the additional funding.
