Engineering K-12 Outreach Classes

  • Creating the Tech Challenge (E 192)
In winter quarter, both in 2007 and 2008, students have worked with the staff of the Tech Museum in San Jose to suggest ideas for the museum's annual yearlong engineering competition for 6-12th graders. In 2007, the students suggested a water filtering idea, that helped inspire the eventual contest.
  • Teaching Science Literacy for a Sustainable Society (CEE 277A)
In this civil and environmental engineering class, students learn how to teach science to nontechnical audiences emphasizing technologies and science for the sustainable use of water. Topics include learning styles, and the role of engineers and scientists in K-12 and media communication. Students develop teaching modules to be used in educational settings involving nontechnical audiences. For a glimpse of the student-teachers in action, see the video in the sidebar.

Founded in 1992 as a partnership between the School of Engineering and the Redwood City School District, PCMI provides six weeks of intensive math curriculum for students in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade. The program offers four levels of math, ranging from basic math to algebra. Classrooms are run by certified teachers from Redwood City School District, and assisted by 6 Stanford student tutors, who act as role models and provide intensive math tutoring in support of the teacher’s lessons.
