Engineering K-12 Outreach Classes
- Creating the Tech Challenge (E 192)
In winter quarter, both in 2007 and 2008, students have worked with the staff of the Tech Museum in San Jose to suggest ideas for the museum's annual yearlong engineering competition for 6-12th graders. In 2007, the students suggested a water filtering idea, that helped inspire the eventual contest.
- Teaching Science Literacy for a Sustainable Society (CEE 277A)
In this civil and environmental engineering class, students learn how to teach science to nontechnical audiences emphasizing technologies
and science for the sustainable use of water. Topics include learning
styles, and the role of engineers and scientists in K-12 and media communication.
Students develop teaching modules to be used in educational
settings involving nontechnical audiences. For a glimpse of the student-teachers in action, see the video in the sidebar.
