Engineering Faculty Receive High Honors
Stanford Engineering congratulates its newest members of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Dean Jim Plummer and Professor Mark Horowitz. Get details.

Professor David A.B. Miller was elected to the National Academy of Sciences. Get details. Congratulations to these three distinguished scientists.

Research Profile:
CS Professor Daphne Koller is helping biologists unravel some of the many mysteries of molecular biology by creating a unique brand of artificial intelligence software that can infer steps in the complex processes that govern the functioning of genes and proteins. For her groundbreaking research she has won a major new award given by the Association for Computing Machinery and the Indian tech company Infosys.

Alumni Profile: Herve Lebret
Herve Lebret (MS 1990 EE) wants to see a more entrepreneurial culture in his native Europe and has written a recent book explaining what the continent can learn from Silicon Valley. Of course his insights and the lessons he draws might well be interesting to people in the Valley, too.

Ask the Expert: Pat Hanrahan
Professor Hanrahan is an engineer but he fully appreciates the artistic mission of his work on computer graphics rendering. In answering the question, “What roles can realistic computer graphics play in the movies?” he says the technology should always be used in whatever style best suits telling the story.

Engineering Puzzle
A new version of the find-the-antenna game. Thanks for everything, Scott Kim, our puzzle master!

A SNEAK PREVIEW
K to 12 Web Site for Young Engineers
Engineering alumni, you are the first to take a look at this new Web site. Let us know what you think. Better yet, let us know what your children think. We hope that these pages will bring the excitement of engineering and scientific discovery to your children. Please write, e-mail, or phone with ideas, comments, and kind words because this site is a work in progress.

Engineering Memory of the Month
Every spring Stanford Engineering honors not only the top five percent of the graduating seniors but also the teachers those students nominate as their greatest inspiration. Back in 1973, you could get your Terman award from Terman himself. As we remember the winners of yesterday, we also present this year’s best of the best.

Make a Memory!
Email us at david.orenstein@stanford.edu with your Stanford engineering memory along with pictures if you have them. We'd love to hear from you.
