Tutoring

Tutoring is available free to all undergraduates. Tutoring in engineering fundamentals courses is provided in regular sessions and tutors hold regular hours at most residence halls around campus for introductory courses in math, chemistry, physics, biology, and other classes. Individual tutoring for more advanced courses is also available. Engineering tutoring is sponsored by a partnership between the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) and the school's Engineering Diversity Program (EDP).

Stanford Engineering encourages qualified students who are interested in tutoring to apply.

Finding a tutor
Tutors are available in most courses by appointment. To meet with a one-on-one tutor, visit the online appointment scheduler. If you are looking for a tutor in a course not listed, please write tutoringhelp@stanford.edu. CTL and Stanford Engineering's Office of Student Affairs (OSA) will work together to try and find a tutor for you. This process can take a week or more. In the meantime, attend all study sessions and office hours offered by the course faculty and teaching assistants to keep up with the class.

Engineering fundamentals courses
The Tau Beta Pi student honor society provides free tutoring sessions for engineering fundamentals. Go to the TBP or CTL site for more information.

Becoming a Tutor

  • For introductory courses: Apply directly to CTL. Undergraduate and coterm students are preferred. CTL and Stanford Engineering are also interested in reaching out to underrepresented diversity students who wish to be trained and hired as tutors, particularly from the societies: SWE, SBSE, SSCLES, and AISES. Contact Amy Chambers, CTL Tutor Coordinator, at 650.736.7996 to find out more.
  • For advanced engineering courses: To become a tutor for engineering courses not covered by regular CTL or Tau Beta Pi tutoring sessions fill out this Tutor Screening Form and e-mail it to Marta Espinoza or Darlene Lazar in the Stanford Engineering Office of Student Affairs (OSA). Once OSA has your contact information and a list of courses you are qualified to tutor, you will be entered onto a Prospective Tutor List. If a request comes to OSA for tutoring in one of your areas of competency, someone will contact you. Once the match is confirmed, you will be asked to apply at CTL for hiring.
  • For other courses: New tutors for courses other than engineering are always welcome. CTL is also interested in reaching out to underrepresented diversity students who wish to be trained and hired as tutors. Please contact CTL Tutor Coordinator Amy Chambers at 650.736.7996 to find out more.
