Research Profile: Squeezing Light Through Small Holes
Electronics have shrunk to sizes smaller than light, so for light to interact with them, it needs to shrink too. A promising way to “miniaturize” light is to shine it on specially crafted gratings of “subwavelength” (i.e. smaller than light’s size) holes in films of opaque material. Important recent advances in this technology have come from the work of electrical engineering researchers who have a wealth of applications in mind.

Alumni Profile: Kim Goodman
Think that credit card is just a piece of plastic? Alumna Kim Goodman knows better. In September she became executive vice president at American Express, taking charge of the company’s relationship with all merchants across North America.

Ask the Expert: David Dill
With caucuses, primaries, and of course, the general election coming this year computer science Professor David Dill tells us why electronic voting is an idea with significant limits.

Engineering Puzzle
Enjoy the second edition of our microfluidic chips puzzle with a new twist for the new year.

Engineering Memory of the Month
You weren’t completely on your own 55 years ago if you wanted to solve a differential equation. You could use an analog computer. You’d just need about $10,000 (in the dollars of the day) and a full coat closet’s worth of space to store the machine.

Make a Memory!
Email us at david.orenstein@stanford.edu with your Stanford engineering memory along with pictures if you have them. We'd love to hear from you.
