Visiting 'Stanley' at the Smithsonian
Stanley, the self-driving, robot car is the centerpiece of a fabulous exhibit at the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of American History. Over the December 2008 holidays, Mike Montemerlo, the chief software programmer of the car, took his family to see it. He made a video that you can see by clicking on the image at right.
Stanford Engineering alumni in the Washington DC area (even if just for a short visit) are encouraged to see the exhibit for themselves. It features not only Stanley, which won the first-ever race where the cars had to make all the decisions, but also artifacts from the development team, an autonomous motorcycle, and the first autonomous mobile robot, Shakey, developed by emeritus Professor Nils Nilsson.
