John Hennessy is appointed university provost.

Jim Plummer, MS '67, PhD '71 (EE), the John M. Fluke Professor, is named the new dean of engineering.

The David Packard Electrical Engineering Building opens in the new Science and Engineering Quadrangle (SEQ), to the west of the university's Main Quad. There is now a unified complex for science and engineering teaching and research.

Air Force Colonel Eileen Collins, MS '86 (Operations Research), becomes the first woman to command a space mission.
