Construction begins on a radio telescope consisting of 32 parabolic antennas ("dishes") to study the sun's surface and map its temperatures. Professor Ronald Bracewell and colleagues in the Radio Astronomy Institute later use the telescope to monitor solar conditions for NASA during the first lunar landing.
