Civil engineer Samuel Morris, AB '11 (CE), is appointed dean. Morris previously was director of the Pasadena municipal water system.

Stephen Timoshenko, the "father of engineering mechanics," joins the SoE faculty. When he arrived in the U.S. from Eastern Europe, he introduced a new emphasis on scientific and mathematical approaches to mechanics. He pioneered the use of the "energy method" in structural stability and buckling.
