Awards received by faculty for the fiscal year September 1997 through August 1998.
Juan J. Alonso, Aeronautics and Astronautics, was named a Terman Fellow for 1997-2000.

David W. Beach, Mechanical Engineering, was awarded a Bing Fellowship for 1997-2000.

Arthur I. Bienenstock, Materials Science and Engineering and Applied Physics, received an Honorary Ph.D. from Polytechnic University, New York City, in June 1998.

Dan Boneh, Computer Science and Electrical Engineering, was named the David Filo and Jerry Yang Faculty Scholar for 1997-99.

Craig T. Bowman, Mechanical Engineering, was awarded the Ya. B. Zeldovich Gold Medal from the Combustion Institute.

Thomas H. Byers, Industrial Engineering and Engineering Management, received the 1998 Northern California Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year award in the "Supporter of Entrepreneurship" category. He also received (with Robert I. Sutton) the 1998 McGraw-Hill Innovation in Entrepreneurship Pedagogy award given by the Academy of Management.

Brian J. Cantwell, Aeronautics and Astronautics and Mechanical Engineering, was named a Fellow of the American Physical Society.

Samuel S. Chiu, Engineering-Economic Systems and Operations Research, received the 1998 Walter J. Gores Faculty Achievement Award for Excellence in Teaching.

Kyeongjae Cho, Mechanical Engineering, was named a Terman Fellow for 1997-2000.

William J. Dally, Computer Science and Electrical Engineering, was named the William George Hoover Faculty Scholar for 1997-99.

Meiring de Villiers, Engineering-Economic Systems and Operations Research, was named a Reid and Polly Anderson Faculty Scholar for 1997-99.

Christopher Edwards, Mechanical Engineering, was named a Bing Fellow in 1998 and a Terman Fellow for 1997-2000. He also received a Powell Foundation Faculty Scholar award for 1997-98.

Kathleen M. Eisenhardt, Industrial Engineering and Engineering Management, was elected a Fellow of the Academy of Management and named a Craaford Fellow of Lund University in Sweden. Also, she was keynote speaker at the European Group on Organizational Studies conference.

Martin A. Fischer, Civil and Environmental Engineering, was awarded the Hoefer Prize for Excellence in Undergraduate Writing, Stanford University, and received a Powell Foundation Faculty Scholar award for 1997-99.

Michael J. Flynn, Electrical Engineering, received the Tesla Medal from the International Tesla Society, Belgrade, and was awarded an honorary Doctor of Science from Trinity College, University of Dublin, Ireland, in 1998.

Gerald G. Fuller, Chemical Engineering, was awarded the Bingham Medal from the Society of Rheology in October 1997.

Hector Garcia-Molina, Computer Science and Electrical Engineering, was elected a Fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery in 1997.

Alice P. Gast, Chemical Engineering, was named the Olaf A. Hougen Visiting Professor in Chemical Engineering at the University of Wisconsin in 1997, and the Alexander M. Cruickshank Lecturer of the Gordon Research Conferences in 1998. She also received the Alexander von Humboldt Award in 1998.

Peter W. Glynn, Engineering-Economic Systems and Operations Research, was named a Fellow of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics.

Robert M. Gray, Electrical Engineering, received the IEEE Signal Processing Society 1997 Technical Achievement Award in May 1998, and the IEEE Information Theory Society Golden Jubilee Award for Technical Innovation in August 1998.

James S. Harris, Electrical Engineering, received the Alexander Von Humboldt Stiftung Research Award for Senior U.S. Scientists.

Warren H. Hausman, Industrial Engineering and Engineering Management, received the IEEM Eugene Grant Teaching Award in June 1998.

Jean H. Heegaard, Mechanical Engineering, received a Powell Foundation Faculty Scholar award for 1997-99.

Lynn M. Hildemann, Civil and Environmental Engineering, received the 1998 Kenneth T. Whitby Award from the American Association for Aerosol Research.

Jonathan P. How, Aeronautics and Astronautics, received a Powell Foundation Faculty Scholar award for 1997-99.

Ronald A. Howard, Engineering-Economic Systems and Operations Research, received the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS) award for the Teaching of OR/MS Practice in April 1998.

Thomas J. R. Hughes, Mechanical Engineering, received the John von Neumann Medal from the U.S. Association for Computational Mechanics in 1997. He was named a Fellow of the International Association of Computational Mechanics (IACM) and was elected President of the IACM for the period 1998-2002. He was also awarded the Gauss-Newton Medal by the IACM at the World Congress in Buenos Aires in 1998.

Umran S. Inan, Electrical Engineering, received the 1998 Stanford University Tau Beta Pi Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching.

Kosuke Ishii, Mechanical Engineering, was named chair of the Computer and Information in Engineering Division of the American Society of Mechanical Engineering for 1997-98.

Mark Z. Jacobson, Civil and Environmental Engineering, was named a Terman Fellow for 1997-2000.

Blake E. Johnson, Engineering-Economic Systems and Operations Research, was named a Terman Fellow for 1997-2000.

James V. Jucker, Industrial Engineering and Engineering Management, received the IEEM Outstanding Teacher Award (by student vote) in June 1998.

Oussama Khatib, Computer Science, became an AdCom Elected Member of the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society in 1998.

Chaitan S. Khosla, Chemical Engineering, received the Allan P. Colburn Award from the American Institute of Chemical Engineers.

Butrus T. Khuri-Yakub, Electrical Engineering, co-authored a paper (with I. Ladabaum and X. Jin) which was presented at the 1997 Ultrasonics International conference and won the RWB Stephens Student Prize.

Anne S. Kiremidjian, Civil and Environmental Engineering, received the Outstanding Service and Achievement Award from the Applied Technology Council in July 1998.

Christopher A. Klug, Chemical Engineering, was named a Terman Fellow for 1997-2000.

Daphne Koller, Computer Science, received a Powell Foundation Faculty Scholar award for 1997-98.

Charles H. Kruger, Mechanical Engineering, received the AIAA Best Paper Award for 1998 at the 28th AIAA Plasmadynamics and Lasers Conference.
